BIOGRAPHY
Cal started playing the guitar and singing in the early 1990s as
a hobby, once he had the ability to play three chords clearly he started
writing his own songs, then when he had mastered another chord he would
add this to the others and try writing another song ( Cal says "most
of my early songs will never be heard"). After the first
year or so his interest had grown and so in 1991 decided to further
develop his musical talents by attending Perth College. He was
a student there for three years where he attained an HND in "Rock
Music Performance", won the Outstanding Adult Learner Award 1993
and won the Sound Control Music Trophy 1993 - 1994.
After a year of working in a factory Cal returned to further education
where he attended Edinburgh Jewel and Esk Valley College in 1996 - 1997
and achieved his Advanced Diploma in "Film And Television Music".
During this time Cal had already started out on his own as a self employed
solo performer singing cover songs incorporating every kind of musical
style from the 50s to the chart hits of the day and very quickly created
a stir in all kinds of venue throughout Scotland from pubs and
clubs to town halls and small concert halls.
Along with all his own gigs Cal has also supported bands like Wolfstone,
The Ian Hunter Band (Mott The Hoople), Fish (Marilliom), and more....
In 1998, after the departure of Donnie Munro, Runrig was looking for
a new lead singer. This gave Cal the opportunity to audition for
the position. He progressed through the different stages and got
down to the last in Scotland before the band employed the services of
Canadian singer Bruce Guthro.
Rather than be disappointed, he was encouraged and inspired to write
his own songs and release then on his own record label (Cal Music),
therefore enabling him to write, record and promote his own songs while
keeping all copyright control of his works.
2000 was a busy year for Cal, he was continuously touring, while writing
an album and recording when he got a bit of time at home. By the
end of that year the recording was complete and "(Scotland) A Part
Of Me" was aired for the first time. The album is distributed in
Scotland by Gordon Duncan Music Distribution and Highlander Music Distribution
and was made available to all music stores early in 2001
Cal was a WINNER at the festival4stars
National Songwriting Competition. 2007. Cal
would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for him on-line,
there were over 20,000 votes and Cal received 12,953 of them.
